OXFORD, Miss. - Jennifer Nolan broke open a pitcher's duel with a three-run double in the top of the fifth inning and KSU added three more in the seventh to beat Coastal Carolina, 7-1, in the Red and Blue Classic at the Ole Miss Softball Complex on Sunday morning.
Over the first four innings, Kennesaw State's Brittany Matthews and Coastal Carolina's Danyelle Gerdts went pitch-for-pitch in the final game of the weekend tournament, but it was Matthews who came out ahead.
The Owls (18-6) got to Gerdts in the top of the fifth inning when the Coastal Carolina starter experienced a bout of wildness. Alternating walks and outs for the first four batters of the inning; Gerdts walked Keri McKee (1-for-3) to load the bases before Nolan (2-for-4) ripped a three-run, bases-clearing double to right-center field.
Kennesaw State scored three times with two outs in the seventh inning on four consecutive hits by Nolan, Megan Gant (1-for-3), April Keasler (2-for-4) and Kelsey Kulk (1-for-4). With one out, Klair Wells (2-for-4) singled through the left side and after two outs; McKee reached on an error.
Nolan singled through the left side and Gant followed with a line single to right field. Keasler singled for the second time to load the bases before Kulk singled through the left side for a 7-1 lead.
The Owls will travel to Cookeville, Tennessee on Tuesday, March 6 for a doubleheader with Tennessee Tech at 2:00 p.m. central standard time.
