KENNESAW, Ga. - It was mostly laughs, smiles and reminiscing as the Kennesaw State women's soccer team held its First Annual Alumni Match with the current Owls defeating the KSU Alumni, 6-5, at the KSU Soccer Field.
"What a wonderful occasion," said head coach Rob King as he welcomed back many of the Owls former greats. "I'm very happy that we got this started and we are able to have so many of our former student-athletes come back to celebrate our program."
The new Owls did manage to defeat the wise Owls by a goal with the aged vets making a very late comeback and nearly tying the match.
"It was good to see the old girls back on campus," King quipped as he enjoyed the time spent with his former players. "There was a good bit of cheating going on by the alums so I'm glad we taught them well."
The seven-on-seven match was complete with flags, pins and many of the best soccer players in the region. No less than 12 all-conference players were back on campus to celebrate what has become one of the most successful women's soccer programs in the country.
Jessie Fream, the Owls first All-American, was back to visit with her former teammates but did not play due to a knee injury. A local product, Fream was a member of the 2002 undefeated inaugural team and the 2003 national championship squad.
"It's great to be back on campus and to be a part of this program," said Fream. "Everything that has happened here in just five years is amazing. All the successes, the national championship, the undefeated season and now playing Division I is a testament to the commitment the coaches and players have to making Kennesaw State soccer the best program in the country."
