OXFORD, Miss. - Missy Hobdy pitched a one-hitter to lead Kennesaw State to an 8-0 win over Southern Miss in the Red and Blue Classic at the Ole Miss Softball Complex on Friday evening.
Hobdy stayed unbeaten in five decisions this season as she struck out six batters and walked just one in the five-inning complete game. The only blemish on the senior's night came in the second inning when Lauren Castellyi (1-for-2) doubled to right center field with one out.
April Keasler (2-for-2), the reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week and freshman Kelsey Kulk (1-for-2) each homered in the game for the Owls (15-6) who scored 13 runs in Friday's two games.
After scoring a pair of unearned runs in the second inning, the Owls erupted for six runs in the fourth. Kulk led-off the frame with her first collegiate home run, a solo-shot to straightaway center field. With one-out, Klair Wells (1-for-4) tripled and scored on a Jamie KeKaualua (2-for-4) single for a 4-0 lead.
After a groundout and a walk, Megan Gant (1-for-2) singled for a 5-0 lead before Keasler ripped her third home run of the season, a three-run blast down the left field line giving the Owls an eight-run cushion.
Hobdy retired the last eight batters of the game in order, including striking out the side in the fourth inning.
Kennesaw State will play Alcorn State on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. CST and Stephen F. Austin at 1:00 p.m. before concluding the weekend with a Sunday morning game against Coastal Carolina at 10:00 a.m.
