KENNESAW, Ga. - Keri McKee got her 300th career hit and Janet Kearns pitched a one-hit, complete game as Kennesaw State downed Coastal Carolina, 3-0, at the Coastal Carolina Softball Field on Saturday evening.
McKee, the reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week and the Owls all-time hits leader, reached the historic milestone in her final at-bat of the day as she capped a perfect 3-for-3 afternoon with an opposite field double.
Kennesaw State (24-10) broke on top early, scoring three times against the host Lady Chanticleers. Kelley Cowart (2-for-3) led off with a walk and was moved to second on a successful sacrifice bunt by Kelsey Kulk. McKee (3-for-3) followed with a double down the left field line for a 1-0 KSU lead.
After McKee moved to third on a passed ball, Jennifer Nolan (1-for-4) doubled to center field to give the Owls a quick 2-0 lead and in the process appeared to rattle Coastal Carolina (8-19) pitcher Brittney Hollifield. A wild pitch moved Nolan to third base and the Owls scored their third run when a pitch got past catcher Glynn Tolleson, scoring Nolan for a 3-0 KSU advantage.
Meanwhile, Janet Kearns (3-3) was nearly untouchable in the circle. The right-hander retired the first 14 batters she faced before allowing a single to Erika Trujillo with two outs in the fifth inning. Kearns would allow only two base runners in the game, the second coming on an error in the seventh inning as she evened her season record.
The Owls had their Sunday schedule adjusted due to weather considerations. Kennesaw State will play Appalachian State at 10:00 a.m. and then play Coastal Carolina at 12:30 p.m.
