KENNESAW, Ga. - Clint Roques hit his first career home run and Martin Baker drove in two runs as Kennesaw State downed Charleston Southern, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Stillwell Stadium.
Roques posted the Owls (10-7) first run in the bottom of the second as he took a D.J. Thorneburg offering deep over the right field wall to quickly put KSU ahead, 1-0.
KSU added its second run of the game when Daniel Hester led off the inning by reaching on an error. After a Tyler Stubblefield sac bunt moved the runner, Jacob Robbins hit a single to extend his hitting streak to 31 games and put runners on the corners. Martin Baker followed with a single up the middle for this 11th RBI of the season, giving the Owls a 2-0 lead.
The final run of the game came on another Baker single, scoring Stubblefield and giving the Owls enough insurance to secure the series victory and their 10th win of the season.
The Buccaneers (10-11) struggled all afternoon against KSU starter Kyle Heckathorn (2-0). The freshman right hander kept the Bucs off-balanced all day, limiting CSU to just two hits and four walks, while striking out seven.
D.J. Thorneburg (2-3) was credited with the loss after going 6.1 innings, allowing six hits and three runs, while walking two and striking out just three Owls batters.
Justin Freeman picked up his third save of the year for KSU, pitching a scoreless ninth with one strikeout.
The Owls will travel to Jacksonville, Alabama on Tuesday to take on the Jacksonville State Gamecocks at 6:30 p.m., before returning to Stillwell Stadium to host the No. 21 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Wednesday at 6:00.
