KENNESAW, Ga. - Kennesaw State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but clutch hitting by Charleston Southern and two keys errors doomed the Owls as they fell 7-5 on Saturday at Stillwell Stadium.
KSU (9-7) posted three runs in the bottom of the first, started by a bunt from Jacob Robbins, who extended his hit streak to 30-straight games. Martin Baker followed with a single to center, before Jace Whitmer grounded out to third to give the Owls an early 1-0 lead.
The scoring continued when Matt Dallas doubled down the right field line, scoring Jay Morrow. The final run of the inning came with freshman Clint Roques' single.
But the lead would not last long as KSU starter Micah Sales (2-2) struggled with his location early and often.
Sales got into trouble in the third when he started the frame by hitting CSU (10-10) left fielder Justin Fyle. After Stephen Herzog singled to right field, Matthew Steele laid down a bunt towards third base that Sales promptly picked up and threw wildly in the direction of Matt Dallas, allowing Fyle to score.
Sales problems continued when the next batter, Anthony Hayes, doubled to right, bringing home Herzog and moving Steele to third, making the score 3-2. A Chris Krogmeier ground ball plated Steele to tie the game at 3-3, only to be followed by a Sean Doherty single to put Charleston Southern ahead 4-3.
Charleston Southern continued to apply the pressure in the fourth as they once again put the lead runner on after a Matt Eckardt walk. Steele then strolled to the plate and connected on a 1-1 pitch, driving it to center to put runners on the corners. Krogmeier reached on a fielder's choice to make the score 5-3. Two batters later Mark Perry added the Bucs sixth run with a single to left.
CSU plated their final run of the day in the sixth when Ryan Smart scored from third off a great double play by Robbins.
Robbins (2-for-4) and Roques (4-for-4) were the only two Owls to notch two or more hits. Only three other Owls secured a hit.
The Owls and Buccaneers will conclude their series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
