JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Golden Ingle hit a lay-up with one second remaining to give the Owls a thrilling 68-66 overtime win over rival North Florida on Thursday evening at the UNF Arena.
Kennesaw State, who trailed by as many as 11-points in the second half, overcame a 10-point deficit in the final five minutes to force overtime as Ronell Wooten hit the game tying shot with 1:24 remaining in regulation.
Ingle (8-for-16) scored a game-high 20-points and made four three-pointers as the Owls (11-15, 7-7 A-Sun) are at .500 in the Atlantic Sun Conference for the first time this season and ended a streak of four straight overtime losses.
The lead changed hands four times in overtime before Ingle's game-winner gave Kennesaw State a sweep of the Ospreys in the season series. The last-second play after Jon-Michael Nickerson's steal with 31 seconds remaining gave the Owls the final possession of the game.
After James Grimball (6-for-9) hit a jumper to give the Ospreys (2-22, 0-13 A-Sun) a two-point, 62-60, lead in overtime. Seconds later, Andre Morgan (4-for-13) answered with a game-tying jumper.
Wooten (7-for-17) gave the Owls a brief lead with a lay-up at the 2:53 before Germaine Sparks (1-for-7), who missed his previous six shots, brought the UNF crowd alive with a three-pointer with just under two minutes left in the game.
It was from that point forward that Ingle took over. The senior point guard, who also had five assists and two steals, hit the final two baskets of the game, a lay-up at the 1:03 mark and the game-winner.
Ingle also ignited the game tying, 12-2 run that forced overtime. A three-pointer with 4:33 left in the game cut the lead to seven points. A pair of UNF free-throws pushed the lead up before Wooten, who scored eight of the Owls last nine points, hit the first of his two-straight three-pointers to make the score 60-54 with 4:09 left.
After a Morgan free-throw, Wooten drained another long-range bomb that trimmed the made the score 60-58 with 2:35 left to play.
Once again it was another stellar defensive performance by the Owls that proved to be the difference in the game. Kennesaw State caused North Florida to commit 18 turnovers and had 10 steals.
The Owls held North Florida to just 33 percent shooting (2-for-6) in the overtime period and caused two turnovers. Meanwhile Kennesaw State shot 50 percent from the field in overtime and did not commit a turnover.
Kennesaw State will be back in action on Saturday when they play Jacksonville in the final regular season conference road game of the season.
