KENNESAW, Ga. - Jennifer Nolan hit a walk-off, three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Owls a, 3-0, win over Liberty in the Owl Classic at Bailey Park on Sunday afternoon.
Brittany Matthews (4-2) was stellar in the game tossing a nine-inning complete game shutout in which she struck out a career-high 12 batters while scattering just five hits. The Flames (4-3) only once had more than one runner on base, that coming in the ninth inning.
The Owls (11-5) got things started in the ninth when Keri McKee was intentionally walked after Sarah Hesterman was placed on second base after the game had went to the international tie-breaker rule. Nolan then followed with a no-questions-asked home run to left-center field.
While Matthews was busy cooling the Flames bats, the Kennesaw State offense had opportunity-after-opportunity to put the game out of reach. The Owls loaded the bases on three occasions in the game, in the third, fourth and eighth innings, but came up empty each time and left 14 runners on base.
Liberty loaded the bases in the ninth, but Matthews got Michelle Fridey looking to end the threat and keep the game scoreless.
Meanwhile, Matthews was superb striking out at least one batters in eight of nine innings including a stretch in the seventh and eighth innings where she struck out five consecutive batters.
Nolan had three hits on the day while Megan Gant, April Keasler and Kelsey Kulk each had two hits for the Owls.
The Owls will conclude the Owl Classic with a game against College of Charleston.
