Home Runs Not Enough

Birmingham, Al. -Kennesaw State was able to answer a four-run first inning by the Bulldogs of Samford despite homerun efforts by Adam Cross and Jace Whitmer. The Owls were defeated, 5-2 by Samford after their only runs came from two home runs in the top of the fourth and eighth innings.

Samford (4-2) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning after Louis Rojas hit three-run home run scoring Michael Marseco and Kyle Krebs. The last run of the inning came when Bear Burnett's double to left center scored Garrett Rice who reached base on a single to center field.

The Owls responded in the top of the fourth inning with a lead-ff home run by Adam Cross over the left field fence. Kennesaw State was unable to keep the inning alive after singles from Whitmer and Brady Vaugh and a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Martin. The Bulldogs' final run of the evening came in the bottom of the third inning after Burnett reached on an error by Owls' third baseman. Burnett then advanced two bases on an error by the pitcher. This placed him at third and Morgan's groundout RBI scored Burnett.

Kennesaw State (2-4) looked to start a rally in the eighth inning with Jace Whitmer's one-out homerun to center field. The hope was short-lived as the Owls left two stranded to end the inning. The Owls threatened in the ninth after Jerome Wooley was hit by Joseph Eden's pitch. A single by Matt Dallas and a walk by Upton loaded the bases. The inning ended with Wooley being put on at third unassisted on a fielder's choice by Whitmer.

Trent Hill (2-0) picked up the win for the Bulldogs after going seven innings, allowing an earned run while striking out five Owls. The save went to Joseph Edens after pitching one inning of relief, giving up six hits and striking out two. Bubba Blalock suffered the loss for the Owls.

The two teams will continue their series tomorrow afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m CST.
