Box Score

KENNESAW, Ga. - Kennesaw State held off a late rally by Samford as the Owls defeated the Bulldogs, 8-7, in the first game of a doubleheader at Bailey Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The Owls (8-4) ended their three-game losing streak with the win that ended up being much closer than it looked like it was going to be. Kennesaw State jumped out to an early lead and after a five-run fifth inning, led 8-2 before the Bulldogs (7-3) rallied off starter Norie Glazebrook (3-1) in the top of the seventh.

The Bulldogs, who are off to their best start in school history, battled back with one out in the seventh beginning with a Whitney Terry walk. Jeslyn Metcalf reached on an error by the Owls third baseman Jennifer Nolan. After getting Jessica Owens to foul out, Liz Pearse singled through the right side to make the score 8-3. After the second walk of the inning, Glazebrook was pulled for Janet Kearns.

The senior right-hander, who has been struggling at times this year, saw her second pitch lined over the left center field fence by Shelley Stanley, cutting the lead to one-run. Kearns would notch the final out for the save.

Keri McKee, who saw her 10-game hitting streak end on Sunday night against Georgia Tech, got back on track with a 3-for-3 day. Jennifer Nolan and Malorie Weller each had two hits as the owls pounded out 11 hits in the game.

The Owls scored a pair of unearned runs in the second courtesy of three Samford errors. Kennesaw State scored five runs in the fifth inning and would end up needing all of them.

Four straight hits gave the Owls a pair of runs and two more Samford errors gave the Owls three more runs as the Owls built a 7-2 lead. A Weller double gave the Owls their eighth run.

Pearse had two hits and three runs batted in for the Bulldogs. Metcalf and Stanley also had two hits for Samford.
