Box Score

KENNESAW, Ga. - A two-run home run by Jennifer Yee and a three-run blast by Brittany Barnes in the third inning was enough offense for Georgia Tech as the Yellow Jackets defeated Kennesaw State, 8-2, in the final game of the 2007 Owl Classic at Bailey Park.

The Yellow Jackets (6-1), who won the two-day event with a perfect 4-0 record, did most of their damage off starter Brittany Matthews in the third inning when Yee hit a two-run blast and Barnes followed with a three-run homer for a 5-0 lead.

Jennifer Nolan tried to rally the Owls (7-4) in the bottom of the inning when she launched her second home run of the season, a two-run blast to left field, making the score 5-2.

Missy Hobdy, who pitched effectively all weekend, was solid again in relief as she shut down Georgia Tech until Savannah Brown ripped a three-run blast in the fifth inning, chasing the left-hander in favor of Janet Kearns. The Marietta, Ga. native pitched three scoreless innings of relief, scattering just two hits.

Kennesaw State put together a rally in the bottom of the fifth inning as Tech starter Whitney Humphreys walked the bases loaded with one out. However, the right-hander came back to strike out Keri McKee, who saw her 10-game hitting streak come to an end, and get Malorie Weller to ground out.

The Owls also loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Humphreys, for the second time, pitched out of the jam beginning with retiring McKee. The tech starter got the Owls leading hitter to fly out before Weller knocked back to the box to end the game.

The loss was the third straight for Kennesaw State and it was the first-ever loss to Georgia Tech. The Owls had won the previous three meetings with the Yellow Jackets.

The Owls will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Samford at 3:00 p.m. at Bailey Park.
