BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Owls dropped a hard-fought doubles point and couldn't regroup in singles as Gardner-Webb shut down Kennesaw State, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon.

The bright spot for the Owls came in doubles where the No. 1 team of Mercedes Cobos and Giselle Nakakura edged Amy Beavers and Laura Kriett, 9-8 (8-6). With the advantage, a win at No. 2 or No. 3 doubles would have given the Owls their first point since the opener at Georgia State.

However, the Owls (0-4) fell with little resistant at No. 2 where Monica Walser and Jenny Gomez defeated Karen Ammann and Caroline Page 8-3. At No. 3, Jeni Thomas and Lindsey Whalen clawed with Kasey Ellis and Carol Pancia until the Bulldogs pair emerged with a 9-8 (7-5) win.

"We played a very strong doubles match today and Giselle and Mercedes pulled out a big win for us," said head coach T.J. Greggs. "Jeni and Lindsey had multiple match points in their match as well, so that could have easily gone our way."

With the loss in doubles looming, the Owls couldn't muster a rally in singles, although Cobos played a strong match against Kriett before falling, 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 1 position.

The No. 2 flight saw Ellis holding off Ammann, 6-2, 6-4. After a close first set, Walser came away with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Nakakura at No. 3 singles.

The bottom of the Owls lineup won just four games as Gomez downed Thomas at No. 4, 6-2, 6-0. Beavers beat Page in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 and Pancia blanked.

"I think the team was a little deflated after coming so close to winning the doubles point," added Greggs. "But, we need to do a better job of playing a complete match in both singles and doubles."

The Owls are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to play Charlotte at 11:00 a.m.
