KENNESAW, Ga. - Miami (Ohio) scored three runs in the final two innings to break open a 3-3 tie and defeat the Owls, 6-3, in the Owl Classic at Bailey Park on Sunday afternoon.
After Janet Kearns relieved Missy Hobdy in the top of the sixth inning, the Redhawks did their damage, scoring a run in the sixth and two in the seventh.
With two-outs and a runner on in the sixth, Megan Gant dropped a foul pop and Briana Burke took advantage with a single through the left side. Breanna Robinson then reached on an error by center fielder April Keasler, scoring Christine Bills with the go-ahead run.
Miami (Ohio) would add two more runs off Kearns in the top of the seventh after the first two runners of the inning reached base on a single and a fielder's choice. A sacrifice fly by Alexis Javier scored the fifth run of the game and an RBI single by Bills gave Miami a three-run lead.
Hobdy, who made her first start of the year, pitched well with the second-inning exception where she allowed a pair of hits and a three-run homer. The left-hander allowed three runs on four hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work.
After the three-run home run by in the top of the second inning by Leslie Macedo, freshman Malorie Weller answered back for the Owls in the fifth inning when she delivered a two-out, bases-clearing double to left center field to tie the game.
Keri McKee extended her hitting streak to 10 games with a double to lead off the seventh inning. This is the second straight season in which McKee has begun the year with a double-digit hitting streak.
The Owls will play Georgia Tech in the final game of the Owl Classic at 6:00 p.m. at Bailey Park.
