KENNESAW, Ga. - Kennesaw State scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and went on to defeat Army, 16-1, in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Bailey Park. KSU won the nightcap, 8-2.
The Owls (5-1) loaded the bases with their first three batters as Klair Wells (2-for-3) walked, Jennifer Nolan (2-for-4) singled and Keri McKee walked. Malorie Weller (2-for-3) then singled through the left side for a 1-0 lead.
A Megan Gant (2-for-3) groundout made the score 2-0 and Sarah Hesterman (2-for-3) followed with an RBI-single for a three-run Kennesaw State lead.
After a walk to Norie Glazebrook loaded the bases for the second time, April Keasler (1-for-2) and Amanda Malcom (1-for-2) came up with back-to-back, two-run doubles to right field for a 7-0 lead. Nolan finished the scoring with an RBI single.
Starter Brittany Matthews (1-0), making her first appearance of the season, was effective in closing down the Black Knights (0-1). The southpaw struck out three batters in the first two innings and continued her dominance over four innings, finishing with seven strikeouts.
Army's Jessi Muckelroy came in to pitch in the third inning and was promptly greeted by a Wells single, giving the freshman a six-game hitting streak to begin her collegiate career.
McKee then pushed her hitting streak to six-games with an RBI single through the right side and Gant followed with an RBI single as the Owls built an 11-0 lead. Kelsey Kulk (1-for-2) doubled with the bases-loaded to cap the four-run third inning and give KSU a 13-0 lead.
Gant, Hesterman and Kulk would add RBI's in a three-run fourth inning to finish the scoring for Kennesaw State.
Missy Hobdy pitched the final inning for the Owls and retired the Black Knights in order for the Owls first home win of the year.
In the nightcap, Norie Glazebrook pitched a complete-game, five-hitter, as the Owls took seven innings to defeat the Black Knights, 8-2, to sweep the twinbill.
Kennesaw State (6-1) scored three runs in both the first inning and second innings to cruise to the six-run win.
Malorie Weller had three hits and three runs batted in for the Owls while Amanda Malcom and April Keasler each had two hits. Malcom hit her first home run of the year in the second inning, a blast to straight away center field.
Keri McKee extended her hitting streak to seven games while freshman Klair Wells had her six-game streak stopped after going hitless in three at-bats.
The Owls will host the Owls Classic beginning tomorrow. Kennesaw State opens the 10-game, two-day event against Georgetown at 10:00 a.m. The field also includes Georgia Tech, Evansville and Miami (Ohio).
