STARKVILLE, Miss. - Kennesaw State scored two runs in the fifth inning and Megan Gant added an insurance home run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Owls defeated Iowa State, 3-1, in the 2007 MSU Bulldog Round Robin at the MSU Softball Field.
The Owls (4-1) got their first of two fifth inning runs when ISU first baseman Jessica Quade's error put April Keasler on first to lead off the frame. After a successful sacrifice bunt by Glazebrook, Hollie Huffman singled and moved to second on throw. Wells singled to right field for the 1-0 lead.
Jennifer Nolan then walked to load the bases. Keri McKee, who extended her hitting streak to five games with a hit in the fourth inning, promptly singled through the right side scoring Huffman for a two-run lead.
Iowa State (2-3) was able to chip back a run in the top of the sixth inning when Katie Reichling led off with a double down the left field line. After a wild pitch by Janet Kearns, who came in the game in relief of starter Norie Glazebrook, moved the runner to third. Reichling scored on a groundout to third by Jessica Quade.
In the bottom of the sixth inning Gant pulled a home run to left field to give Kennesaw State a two-run lead. The blast was the first home run for Gant since the 2005 season and the third of her career.
The Cyclones put up 12 hits in the game and had six hits over the first four innings against Glazebrook, but the Kennesaw State held Iowa State without a run, thanks to strong defense.
In the fourth inning after a walk and a single, Alex Johnson singled to right field. Amanda Bradberry tried to score from second, but a strong throw by Malorie Weller and a solid tag by catcher Megan Gant snuffed Bradberry at the plate.
In the top of the fifth inning Fallon Johnson smacked a one-out single through the right side. After Jennifer Bigbee reached on a fielder's choice, Janet Kearns replaced Norie Glazebrook. After Bigbee stole second base, Ashley Killeen lined a single to center field, but an excellent throw by April Keasler snuffed Bigbee at the plate and kept the game scoreless.
Kearns (2-0) picked up the win in relief. The Owls right-hander entered the game in the top of the fifth inning and allowed just one run over the 2.2 innings.
The Owls will play their home opener on Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. when they host Army in a doubleheader at Bailey Park.
