KENNESAW, Ga. - The Lady Owls led for the better part of their game on Monday night against Troy. However, a late rally by the Trojans and a pair of uncontested lay-ups erased a five-point KSU lead in the final 67 seconds as the Trojans upended KSU, 57-56 at the KSU Convocation Center.
The Lady Owls (2-2) broke open a 52-52 tie with five straight points to take a 57-52 lead with 1:26 left after forward Britteny Henderson (1-for-6) completed a traditional three-point play with a free-throw.
However, that was the last points the Lady Owls would score. Amy Lewis (5-for-12) hit a pair of free throws with 1:07 left to cut the Kennesaw State lead to three points. A steal and a lay-up by Audrey Muse (2-for-5) pulled Troy (1-1) to within a point at 57-56 with: 37 seconds left.
After working the clock down to under 10 seconds, Greteya Kelley's (7-for-14) jumper came up short and Danielle Realph (3-for-9) grabbed the rebound and dished quickly to Kylie Morrissy (9-for-16) who went the length of the court and pulled up with a short jumper in the lane that bounced twice off the rim before falling in with 0.9 seconds remaining on the clock.
"You cannot let a player dribble 94 feet for a lay-up," said an agitated Colby Tilley after the game. "We played terrible in the final two minutes and didn't deserve to win this game."
Kennesaw State had control of the game in the first half and led by 12 at the break. The Lady Owls would lead from the 13:22 mark of the first half and never trailed until the Trojans final basket.
The Lady Owls shot 42.9 percent in the second half and 42.3 percent for the game, but were called for 15 fouls in comparison to seven for Troy. Both teams combined for 51 turnovers in the game, Troy with 26 and Kennesaw State with 25.
Kelley had another strong effort for Kennesaw State finishing with a team-high 14 points while adding six rebounds, five assists and five steals. Morrissy led all scorers with 20 points and added seven rebounds.
The Lady Owls will head off to Texas to play in the Texas Tech Basketball Traveler's Classic. KSU will play Alcorn State on Thursday, host Texas Tech on Friday and Idaho State on Saturday.
