Too Much Colgate Not Good for Owls

KENNESAW, Ga. - Colgate's Kyle Roemer scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Red Raiders to an 81-53 win over host Kennesaw State in the championship game of the 100 Club Classic at the KSU Convocation Center on Saturday evening.

Roemer, who scored 24 points last night against Texas State, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, as the Red Raiders (4-0) remained undefeated after four games.

Kennesaw State (1-3) led by eight points six minutes into the game before Colgate ran off 12 straight points to build a 17-13 lead with 8:07 remaining. Roemer (8-for-17) began the rally with a three-pointer and ended the run with three free-throws.

Zach Berry (1-for-1) cut the lead to 17-15 with his lone basket of the evening, but the Kennesaw State offense remained stagnate the remainder of the game. Only Ronell Wooten (10 points) scored in double-figures for the Owls.

Colgate rattled off seven straight points to build their lead to nine points, but Kennesaw State kept the deficit under 10 points for the remainder of the first half, twice cutting the lead to five points before heading into the locker room trailing, 30-21.

The Red Raiders outscored the Owls 51-32 in the second half as they shot 58 percent from the field including a perfect 6-for-6 from three-point range. The Owls did hold Colgate to 44.4 percent from the field, the first time this season that they've held an opponent under 50 percent shooting.

Ben Jonson (15 points) and Tim Pounds (12 points) of Colgate scored in double figures and were named to the all-tournament team along with Shuan Stegall and Ronell Wooten of Kennesaw State and Brent Benson of Texas State.

The Owls will be back in action when they head to Miami to play Florida International on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. The game can be heard on SuperTalk 1230/1340 AM.
