KENNESAW, Ga. - After playing a scoreless first half, the Kennesaw State women's soccer team erupted for six second-half goals, including three by Annie Phillips, as the Owls cruised to an easy 6-2 win over Gardner-Webb on Senior Night at the KSU Soccer Complex.
"This was a good win for us tonight," said head coach Rob King. "This gives us confidence heading into what we hope will be a great battle with Mercer next week. Hopefully both teams will come through that match healthy."
After a defensive struggle in the first half, KSU (14-3, 9-1 A-Sun) broke through as Phillips scored in the 52nd minute after beating GWU keeper, Sarah Wyszynski, on a 1-on-1 off a beautiful pass from Maylee Attin-Johnson.
It wouldn't take the Bulldogs (6-11, 4-6 A-Sun) long to respond as Lindsey Gladhill scored the first of her two goals just two minutes later off a free kick from Angie Harvey to knot the game 1-1.
Caitlin Dingle broke the tie in the 57th minute with her 14th goal of the season as she broke though two defenders and fired a rocket to the top right corner to pout the Owls ahead 2-1.
Phillips stole the show, however, as the senior forward scored her second and third goals of the match just 22 seconds apart, both on breakaways, to put the game out of reach. Sara Clapham and Attin-Johnson each added a goal of their own to give the Owls their 14th win in their last 15 matches.
"What a great night for Annie," added King. "For her to finish her home career with three goals on senior night is just fantastic."
KSU controlled play for much of the contest, out-shooting Gardner-Webb 22-10. Wyszynski made eight saves for the Bulldogs, while the Owls' Katie Piotrowski saved two shots to earn her 13th win of the season.
With the victory, the Owls remain tied for first place in the conference with Mercer and set up an all important showdown with the Bears on Wednesday night to see which team will finish as league champion and wrap-up the No. 1 seed in the A-Sun Conference Tournament in two weeks. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Macon and can be seen on A-Sun.TV.
