KENNESAW, Ga. - Sara Clapham slammed home a penalty kick in the 88th minute as she helped Kennesaw State secure a 1-0 win over Campbell on Thursday night at the KSU Soccer Complex.
After battling for 87 minutes to a scoreless draw, KSU (13-3, 8-1 A-Sun) caught the Camels defense napping as Annie Phillips slipped in behind the back line. After being fed a beautiful pass by Clapham, Phillips took one touch to her right before being pulled down in the box by a pair of Campbell defenders to earn the free kick.
The rest was all Clapham as she fired a rocket to the right corner of the net to give the Owls their 13th win in 14 matches and send the Camels (1-11-2, 0-7-2 A-Sun) onward still in search of their first conference win.
KSU controlled play for much of the match, especially in the second half. The Owls held a 17-6 advantage in shots, and out-shot CU 9-3 in the second 45 minutes of play.
Campbell's keeper, Annamarie Ditomasso was the story of the match, making four crucial saves to keep the score knotted at 0-0. The Camels survived their first scare when Clapham's header hit off the crossbar and bounced to Ditomasso in the 15th minute.
Caitlin Dingle looked as if she would score her 14th goal of the season in the 25th minute but her header was saved by the diving Camels' keeper.
Owls' keeper Katie Piotrowski was also stellar in net as the freshman recorded four saves of her own en route to her eighth shut-out of the season.
KSU will be back in action on Saturday night to play host to the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs in the home regular season finale. The Owls will honor their two seniors, Annie Phillips and Whitney Marler, prior to the 7:00 p.m. kick-off.
