BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Andre Morgan missed a game-tying three-pointer as the buzzer sounded ending the second overtime as Campbell held on to edge Kennesaw State, 88-85, at the Carter Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Kennesaw State (5-12, 1-4 A-Sun) overcame a five-point deficit in the final minute of regulation to force overtime and the Owls led for nearly all of the first overtime before Campbell's Eric Smith (8-for-17) drained a three-pointer with three seconds remaining tying the game and forcing the second overtime.
The Owls led early in the second overtime period as Golden Ingle (9-for-25) hit a three-pointer after Reggie Bishop's (6-for-6) lay-up gave Campbell (7-6, 2-1 A-Sun) a 75-73 lead. After Brent Ragsdale (4-for-13) hit a short runner to tie the game at 78, Campbell went on an 8-2 run.
Morgan answered with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to three points and after a pair of free-throws built the lead to five, Keonte Keith (2-for-4) hit two foul shots to set up Morgan's last second three-point attempt.
Trailing 65-60 with 57 second remaining, Morgan hit a short jumper and was fouled by Bishop as his traditional three-point play moved the Owls to within a basket. After Smith missed a jump shot, Golden Ingle, who along with Smith, led all scorers with 27 points, nailed a jumper with 17 seconds remaining to tie the game.
Late in the second half, the Owls (5-12, 1-4 A-Sun) used a furious comeback over a 1:33 span that erased a seven-point Campbell advantage. Trailing 54-47 with 7:07 left to play, Shuan Stegall (5-for-10) hit a free-throw and Golden Ingle quickly followed with a lay-up to trim the Camels lead to four points.
Jonathan Whipple's (3-for-6) fast break basket made it a two-point game before Brent Ragsdale stripped Campbell's Kyle Vejraska (2-for-3) of the ball and raced the length of the floor for an uncontested lay-up to tie the game.
However, a pair of Campbell three-pointers by Smith sandwiched a Stegall tip-in as the Camels built a 60-56 lead. Ingle hit a pair of free-throws and Stegall hit a short jumper as the Owls kept the game within two points until Ledell Eackles (1-for-4) hit a free-throw then drained a short jumper to build a five-point Camel lead.
In the battle of the two of the league's top scorers, Jonathan Rodriguez (3-for-13) had a slight edge on Stegall as the Owls big man got into foul trouble early in the game as he picked up a pair of fouls within 18 seconds in the opening minutes of the contest. Rodriguez would finish with a double-double, 16 points and 10 rebounds while Stegall finished with 12 points and six rebounds.
Ingle, who had been struggling from the field, scored the Owls first four points of the game as he seemed to get his shooting touch back. Ingle scored the seven of the Owls first 12 points and assisted on the other two KSU baskets as the Owls took an early five-point lead.
The Owls led by as many as five points in the first half before Campbell asserted itself. Rodriguez gave the Camels a 21-20 lead with just over six minutes left in the half and they never trailed. Campbell used a 16-9 run to end the half and take an eight-point lead into intermission.
The Owls will be back in action on Wednesday evening when they face Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. est.
