Scrappy Lady Owls Just Fall Short

KENNESAW, Ga. - The never quit Lady Owls battled ETSU tooth-and-nail on Saturday afternoon and mounted a tremendous second half rally that just fell short as the Lady Buccaneers downed Kennesaw State, 95-88, at the KSU Convocation Center before a season-high 904 fans.

ETSU (12-7, 8-1 A-Sun), winners of eight of their last nine games, had to withstand a strong Kennesaw State rally in the second half that saw the Lady Owls come within a basket in the final seconds before falling short.

Kennesaw State (8-11, 4-5 A-Sun) rallied back from deficits as much as 16 points in the first half and trailed by as many as 12 points three times in the second half before battling to within one possession four times in the final 10 minutes.

After trailing by 11 points at halftime, the Lady Owls were able to trim the lead to 10 points before going on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 59 apiece.

Jennifer Baker (6-for-13) hit a three-pointer then added a pair of free throws to cut the lead in half and Rosetta Hollis (7-for-13) followed with a basket to cut the lead to three points. ETSU's Kelly Turman (7-for-12) and KSU's Ashley Johnson (2-for-11) exchanged baskets before Jade Robinson (4-for-11) tied the game with a long-range three.

Two more ties followed in the next two minutes before the Lady Bucs rebuilt their lead. Turman hit a short jumper and Jenny Norman followed for a four point ETSU advantage. The Lady Bucs built an 11-point lead with 3:42 remaining before KSU rallied back on last time.

Stephanie Scearce (5-for-10) hit a pair of free-throws and Gia Lockett (4-for-5), who had a tremendous effort off the bench, hit a turnaround jumper to cut the ETSU lead to seven points. Twice the Lady Owls would get to within four points and a pair of Baker free-throws made it a two-point game with 22 seconds left but KSU could get no closer.

Michele DeVault (8-for-10) led all scorers with 22 points while Siarre Evans (1-for-5) had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kennesaw State had five players score in double figures with Baker leading the way with 19. Hollis had 18 with Scearce adding 15 points.

The Lady Owls will be back in action on Thursday evening when they travel to Nashville, Tenn. to play Lipscomb. The Lady Owls and the Lady Bisons will tip-off at 8:00 cst at the Allen Center.
