BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Kennesaw State shot a season-low 20.6 percent as Gardner-Webb downed the Lady Owls 52-44 on Thursday night at Paul Porter Arena.
KSU (6-9, 2-3 A-Sun) forced a quick turnover and Jennifer Baker drained a three-pointer to take a 3-0 lead. But that was as far ahead as the Lady Owls would get as nothing they shot managed to fall.
Two Gardner-Webb (5-10, 2-2) lay-ups put the Bulldogs ahead, a lead they would only relinquish once after two Stephanie Scearce free throws with 14:15 to go in the first half.
The Lady Owls put forth a feverous charge early in the second half and pulled within two when Baker sank a jumper to bring the score to 28-26 with 18:24 to go. But despite another cold streak, over the five minutes, which saw KSU miss its next seven shots, the Lady Owls only trailed 33-28 when Brittany Harmon converted a lay-up.
The Bulldogs defense stifled the Lady Owls down the stretch and GWU gained their largest lead with two Shameka Smith free throws to give them a 48-37 lead with 3:20 to go. The Bulldogs held on to move to 4-0 at home.
Baker led KSU with 14 points on 4-of-15 shooting. The sophomore guard grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and was 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Rosetta Hollis added nine and Stephanie Scearce added eight.
KSU will now travel to Buies Creek, North Carolina to take on Campbell on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
