SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Despite out-shooting Wofford, 18-8, Kennesaw State was unable to put anything in the back of the net as the Owls and the Terriers battled to a scoreless draw on Friday night at Snyder Field.
The Owls (2-1-1), who moved up to No. 12 in this week's Soccer Buzz Regional Rankings, struggled to hit the target throughout the match. Only seven of the Owls' 18 shots ended up on goal, while the Terriers (1-2-2) put five of their eight shots on target.
Wofford provided the first scoring opportunity 21 minutes into the game when Jessica Connett sent a hard shot from 40 yards out into the upper right-hand corner of the goal mouth. The attempt was deflected off Owl goalkeeper Staci Pugh's hands and then brushed against the crossbar before being cleared by the KSU defense.
The Owls nearly got on the board with just under seven minutes left in the second regulation period when senior defender Rebecca Hall blasted a direct kick off the Terrier wall following a Wofford foul just outside the 18-yard box.
The Owls then had two chances in the second overtime frame. The first came with just over eight minutes to go as sophomore Caitlin Dingle found herself all alone in front of the net and sent her shot high from 15 yards.
Another direct kick opportunity with just over four minutes remaining by senior Laura Tucker sailed just high.
Tucker and sophomore Maylee Attin-Johnson led KSU with four shots apiece. Hall and junior Sara Clapham each fired two shots, while six other Owls each had one. Connett led Wofford with three shots.
Pugh, who recorded her second straight shut-out and third in four games, made five saves on the night. Austin Somers made five saves, while Becca Maloney, who played the entire second half and both overtimes, made two.
The Owls will return home to take on the Jacksonville State Gamecocks on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the KSU Soccer Complex.
