CHARLESTON, S.C. - Senior Rebecca Hall gathered a cross from fellow senior Stephanie Grzeszkowiak and headed home the game winner with less than a minute remaining in double overtime as the Owls marched to a thrilling 1-0 win over the College of Charleston on Monday afternoon at Patriots Point.
The teams battled 119 minutes before the Windsor, England native put home her first goal of the season past a diving Erin Smith off a great corner kick from Grzeszkowiak.
KSU (2-1) controlled play on both sides of the field for a majority of the match and was relentless in applying pressure to the Cougars' (2-1) defense until notching the golden goal.
The match started as a back-and-forth battle and it was Charleston who broke the stalemate in the 9th minute as Caroline Wertis fired the first shot of the game wide. After an attempt from Owls' senior Pip Meo was blocked, Wertis once again had an opportunity, but freshman goalkeeper Staci Pugh was up to the task and made her first save of the game.
Shortly thereafter senior Laura Tucker and junior Mandy Nolin each responded with good scoring chances of their own, but both shots managed to miss their targets.
The best scoring opportunity Charleston came in the 33rd minute of the match when the Cougars' Jill Romanik found empty space and rocketed a shot that caromed off the crossbar. The fortunate bounce off the woodwork seemed to fire-up the Owls, as the defense would not allow another shot in the first half.
The second half was much like the first, with both defenses locking down their opponent. Despite holding a 10-3 edge is shots in the second 45 minutes, the Owls could not manage to slip anything past Smith.
Pugh recorded her second shutout on the young season while making three saves. Smith recorded six saves in the match despite allowing the first goal of the season for the Cougars.
The Owls out-shot Charleston 4-1 in the second extra period and 20-8 for the match. KSU also held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Owls will look to continue their winning ways when they return to the state of South Carolina to take on Wofford on Friday night in Spartanburg.
