BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Kennesaw State volleyball team battled but fell to the Samford Bulldogs on Wednesday night, 3-1 (30-21, 26-30, 30-23, 30-15), at Seibert Hall. With the loss, the Owls fall to 1-12 in their inaugural year.
The two teams looked even as they traded the first six points of the match, but it was Samford (5-9) who would put together six straight points to take a 9-3 lead en route to the nine point victory in game one.
The Owls came roaring back in game two, helped by a .209 attack percentage. The Bulldogs managed to tie the game at 12-12, but KSU held off the charge to take game two and level the match at 1-1.
Game three started with promise for the Owls, as they found themselves up with an early 8-4 lead. Samford came back on the strength of a 8-2 run to take a 12-10 advantage, one in which they would never relinquish en route to the game three win.
The final game of the day saw Kennesaw State once again jump out to an early lead at 4-3. The Bulldogs bit back and rattled off an 8-1 run to take an 11-5 lead. The Owls would not get any closer than nine points as Samford's play derailed any plans of a KSU comeback.
Asjia Stokes led the Owls with 13 kills and seven digs, while Ashley Landers posted 12 kills and eight digs. Selina O'Leary had 15 digs and three aces.
The Owls will have ten days off before they return to action when they travel to Campbell on September 29 at 7:00 p.m.
