Owls Fall in Four to Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Kennesaw State dropped the final match of the Catamount Clash, falling to host Western Carolina in four games (30-27, 30-24, 27-30, 30-19). The Owls lost the first two games, won the third game before dropping the finale at the Ramsey Center.

Jenny Black was named to the all-tournament team, becoming the first-ever Kennesaw State player to win an award this season. Black finished the weekend with 24 kills, a pair of service aces and 15 digs.

In the opening game of the match the Owls scored the first point and throughout the first game but couldn't close out the Catamounts. Kennesaw State held a 23-17 lead and seemed in control before Western Carolina mounted a comeback and pulled within a point on three occasions. KSU led 27-25 before Western Carolina ripped off five straight points to take the first game, 30-27.

In the second game, the Owls built a 4-1 lead early and stayed within striking distance throughout the game. Aaryn Phillips ace brought the Owls within a point at 17-16, but that was as close as the Owls could get. Three times KSU came within two points of the Catamounts, the last coming at 24-22, before WCU scored six of the final eight points.

The third set saw Kennesaw State jump ahead early, leading 10-8 before Western scored five straight points to lead 13-8. After falling behind 20-14, the Owls stormed back into the match with four straight points ignited by back-to-back kills by Asjia Stokes.

Trailing 22-19, KSU got three straight kills with Black being sandwiched by kills by Ashley Landers. Western Carolina took a 25-23 lead before back-to-back kills by Black tied the game. Two straight service aces by Landers gave KSU a two-point advantage and a kill by Lindsey Plotner put the Owls in control of the game.

The final game of the day saw Kennesaw State stay close at 17-16 before a 9-0 run by Western Carolina dimmed the Owls chances as KSU could get only within nine points.

The Owls will be back in action on Tuesday evening when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama to play Samford.
