KENNESAW, Ga. - Annie Phillips scored a pair of goals and Kennesaw State's shutout streak continued in front of the home fans on Thursday evening as the Owls blanked the West Georgia Wolves, 4-0, at the KSU Soccer Complex.
Freshman goalkeeper Staci Pugh and the Owls solid defense led by Rebecca Hall, Jessica Kalonji, Stephanie Grzeszkowiak and Whitney Marler, posted their fourth consecutive shutout as Kennesaw State won its second straight match and stayed unbeaten in their last four decisions.
The Owls (4-1-1) got on the board quickly as they scored twice in the first 13 minutes of the contest. Phillips gave Kennesaw State a quick lead when she took a pass from Pip Meo and scored off a West Georgia defender in the 7th minute. Meo came in on Wolves goalkeeper Jennifer Ross and when the Wolves keeper slid out to meet Meo, the Owls midfielder held onto the ball and scooted a pass to Phillips.
Rebecca Hall scored her second goal of the season in the 13th minute when she headed a corner kick from Grzeszkowiak to the right of Ross for a 2-0 KSU advantage.
Kennesaw State's smothering defense allowed just four shots during the match with West Georgia (3-3-0) never really mounting a serious threat. Pugh had three saves on the night, all in the first half, as she picked up her fifth shutout of the year.
Phillips gave the Owls their third goal of the night in the 51st minute when she settled a crossing pass from Pip Meo in front of the West Georgia goal and tapped a six-yard shot past the Wolves Patricia Logsdon. Mandy Nolin and Sara Clapham helped Caitlin Dingle scored Kennesaw State's final goal of the night and her first as an Owl, as she blasted an 18-yard shot past Logsdon to the lower right corner to make the score 4-0.
The four Kennesaw State goals scored in the match marked the third time in six matches this season that the Owls have scored three or more goals in a contest. The Owls out shot West Georgia, 35-4, and had six corner kicks while not allowing the Wolves any corners.
The Owls will be back in action on September 22 when they play Stetson in DeLand, Florida at 7:00 p.m., KSU will then play Mercer in Macon, Georgia on September 25 at 2:00 p.m.
