KENNESAW, Ga. - In front of 1,508 wild fans at the KSU Convocation Center, Kennesaw State saw a Ronell Wooten sparked second-half rally came up short as George Washington downed the Owls 69-52 on Tuesday evening.
After trailing by 21 points at halftime, the Owls (1-3) began the second half with a flurry. The game's leading scorer Wooten (8-for-16) hit five three-pointers in a five minute span as Kennesaw State erased a 21-point deficit with a 20-2 run that cut a 44-23 lead to three-points.
Wooten, who ended the game with 24 points and was the Owls leading scorer for the second time this season, scored 17 of his points in the second half after going 2-for-8 in the first including missing all five of his three-point shots in the half.
After freshman Keonte Keith hit a lay up with 13:32 left to play to cut the George Washington lead to 46-43, the Colonials (4-0) went on a 12-0 run to put the game out of the Owls reach.
The night began slowly for Kennesaw State as they fell behind 10-0 five minutes into the game. George Washington controlled the pace of the game and their size in the paint resulted in five blocked shots in the first six minutes. The Colonials would end the night with 14 blocked shots.
The Owls didn't score their first basket until the 13:29 mark when Wooten gave the crowd its first excitement of the evening on a baseline slam. The dunk kicked off a brief 7-0 run that cut the George Washington lead to 13-8 with 12:24 to play in the half. KSU would get no closer than five points in the first half after another Wooten slam made the score 15-10 with 11:34 left before the break.
Kennesaw State scored 13 points off 16 George Washington turnovers and also enjoyed a slight advantage on the boards, out rebounding the Colonials 41-40 including 24 offensive boards.
Junior Shuan Stegall had his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Golden Ingle added six points and dished out six assists.
The Colonials had four players in double figures led by sophomore Rob Diggs with 20 points, senior Dokun Akingbade added 14, senior Regis Koundjia chipped in 13 and junior Maureece Rice dropped in 11.
The Owls will break for the Thanksgiving holiday before hosting hosting Florida International on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 4:00 p.m.
