Box Score

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Kennesaw State built a 17-point halftime lead and held on from there to record their first win of the season with a 59-55 victory over Morgan State in the consolation game of the Carolina First Classic on Saturday.

The Lady Owls (1-2) seemed to be in control of the game after the first 20 minutes as they went to the locker room with a 40-23 lead. KSU was led by DeAndrea Bullock and Rosetta Hollis, who had 12 and 10 points respectively in the first stanza.

The second half was a much different story as Morgan State (1-2) came roaring back, helped mainly by poor KSU shooting. The Lady Owls missed their first 11 shots of the second 20 minutes giving the Bears a chance to cut the lead to 40-31 with 12:17 to go after Phylicia Jones sank two free throws.

But in what can be seen as a sign that this year's team is different than those in the past, the Lady Owls refused to lose and put together a 7-0 run of their own to stretch the lead back to 16. However, KSU struggled again from the field and only managed to make three more field goals the rest of the way, but it was just enough to hold off the pesky Bears.

KSU finished the second half making just 4-of-29 shots (13.8 percent) and ended the game shooting just 25 percent (15-of-60). Conversely, Morgan State shot 30.3 percent for the game (20-of-66).

Hollis earned a spot on the all-tournament team as she finished with 16 points. Bullock also chipped in 16 points, while Jennifer Baker finished with seven.

Corin Adams led the Bears and all scorers with 17 points, while Whitney Johnson finished with five and made the all-tournament team for the Bears.

The Lady Owls will now have a week off before they return to the road for a Nov. 25 match-up with Winthrop at 7:00 p.m. in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
