Nikola Milovac

Parliament Profile: Seizing the Opportunity

By Michael Pitts

The growth of American football over the last four decades is evident in its fascination outside of the United States, where it has now reached almost every corner of the globe and attracted talented athletes from just about everywhere.

This is true for Kennesaw State redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Nikola Milovac, who did not start playing football until he was 16 years old.

A native of Indjija, Serbia, NCAA Division I college football was not on the mind of the childhood soccer fanatic who practically grew up on the pitch.

“When I was 15, I was scrolling through my dad’s phone and saw a local flag football team on Facebook,” Milovac said. “I wanted to try something new so I went to the practice and the brotherhood that we had was just a really good fit for me.”

Within the next two years and countless reps for the Indjija Indians, he was introduced to American football and playing in pads.

“We started playing and actually hitting people and I was like ‘oh wow, this is really fun,’” he said.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, a coach mentioned to him the possibility of playing at the DI level, citing his size and work ethic. From there, he traveled to Europe where his skills grew and received increased exposure, eventually landing at Clearwater Academy in Florida.

What he put on display at Clearwater opened the door to him signing with the University of South Florida. In 2024, he helped USF rush for 180.2 yards per game and accrue 5,300 yards of offense.

It was on a late Wednesday night in October when Milovac first heard of Kennesaw State, after the Owls stunned the college football world with a 27-24 win over previously-unbeaten Liberty.

“It was all over social media,” he added.

After hopping in the transfer portal following the 2024 season, he got in touch with offensive line coach Jay Clements.

“It seemed like a pretty good spot and talking to him more, he brought me on a visit,” he said. “Head coach Jerry Mack and him, they told me how much they believed in me as a player and what I can do to help this team win.”

His conversations with Mack, Clements, the offensive scheme and the opportunities for him to play a key role convinced Milovac to sign with the Black and Gold.

“One of my main goals is to compete for a starting spot and just win games,” he said. “Kennesaw State is in a really good area and it’s a really nice spot to be at. The offense we run here is very exciting.”

Now having been on campus for several months, he already feels right at home.

“Just playing and seeing guys down and others stepping up, that brotherhood is one of my biggest takeaways so far from KSU,” he mentioned.

And that brotherhood is engrained in the culture Mack has brought to Kennesaw State.

“He knows what he needs to do in order to win games, be successful and build a good culture in this program,” he said. “This is definitely the guy you want to play for.”

Milovac won’t rule anything out for his Kennesaw State team this season, highlighting the chemistry that has been built along with the exciting nature of the Owl offense.

One last thing that the lineman - and former soccer player - won’t rule out is a potential appearance as kicker if ever called upon and put special teams coordinator Kyle Blocker on notice.

“I can definitely make a 30- to 35-yarder,” he laughed. “I told Coach ‘Block’ about it; I told him I could do it.”

Milovac suits up for the Black and Gold on Friday, Aug. 29 in the Owls’ season opener at Wake Forest. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on the ACC Network. KSU’s home slate kicks off on Saturday, Sept. 13 vs. Merrimack.

He is currently enrolled at the Coles College of Business at Kennesaw State and is scheduled to graduate in December of 2026.
