FINAL RESULTS
CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Freshman
Jada Tijani finished with an undefeated 6-0 record, while she and junior
Alexandra Mercado won their doubles flight, as the Kennesaw State women's tennis team competed at the WNC Mountain Challenge this weekend hosted by Western Carolina.
Â
Mercado also won her singles flight with a 2-1 record for the Owls, who opened their fall schedule.
Â
"This was a perfect tournament to get us started this fall," said Assistant Head Coach
Miranda Foley. "We had a couple of flight champions, and everyone got some wins under their belt. Ale and Jada played great doubles all weekend. I was encouraged by the fact we finished with a better record on Day 2 than Day 1 – that shows progress to me."
Tijani and Mercado got things rolling on Saturday with a 6-4 doubles win over WCU's Mesalles and Hurt. They improved to 2-0 Saturday by dispatching UNC Asheville's Davidson and Hall, 7-6, in a tiebreker. The duo finished off their doubles flight by taking down Dodd and Parker from USC Upstate, 6-2.
Â
In her singles flight, Tijani opened with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Upstate's Nemeth, and completed her undefeated weekend Sunday with wins over Upstate's Parker, 6-3, 6-3 and Western Carolina's Riley, 6-4, 6-3.
Â
Mercado won her singles flight by defeating Upstate's Dodd, 6-3, 7-5 and Asheville's Hall, 6-3, 6-4.
