KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women’s tennis team is set to begin its 2011-12 season on Friday morning as it hosts the Second Annual Kennesaw State Invitational at Fair Oaks Tennis Center in Marietta.
The tournament will be a three-day, four-team event from Sept.16-18. The other teams that will be participating in the tournament will be Florida A&M, Georgia Southern and Augusta State.
“We are really excited about getting our season underway on Friday,” assistant coach
Olga Elkin said. “It will be nice for the girls to finally play someone besides each other in practice and we look forward to playing some quality matches all weekend.”
The Black and Gold return three starters from last year’s record setting team that finished with a record of 18-6 (7-3 A-Sun). Senior
Vera Shkundina leads the group as she was named to the 2011 All-Atlantic Sun First Team last season. Junior
Therese Lagerkvist and sophomore
Alexandra Apostu are the other returning starters.

Kelsey Kennedy, and freshmen
Jana Hueckinghaus and
Tamara Plocher, will all be making their collegiate debuts in the tournament.
On Friday singles play will begin at 9 a.m., followed by doubles play at 11 a.m. and reverse singles at 1 p.m.
Saturday’s action will start at 11 a.m. with singles action, then doubles at 1 p.m. and reverse singles at 3 p.m.
The final day of the tournament will see singles play begin at 8 a.m., followed by doubles at 10:30 a.m. and reverse singles at 2 p.m.
