KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women’s tennis team pulled out a huge Atlantic Sun Conference road win, 4-3, against Jacksonville on Friday afternoon at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex.
The win improves the Owls to 14-3 (4-1 A-Sun), and it also moves them to within a half game of second place Stetson, while the loss drops Jacksonville to 10-4 (1-3 A-Sun) for the season.
Any match that ends with a final score of 4-3 makes that first doubles point that much more crucial, and on Friday the Owls had a couple teams step up and come away with some big wins.
"The doubles point was absolutely huge for us today, and I liked the way we competed throughout doubles play," head coach Jeffery Kutac said. "We got some great individual efforts in singles from Morgan, Tess and Agatha as well. This was a big win for us today so we have to build off of this and get back out there tomorrow."
Trailing 1-0 in the doubles point, the team of senior
Agatha Palider and sophomore
Therese Lagerkvist pulled the Black and Gold even at 1-1 as they won a tight 9-7 match at the No. 3 doubles spot.
With the doubles point hanging in the balance, the duo of junior
Morgan Carney and freshman
Alexandra Apostu came up big once again just as they have all season for the Owls. Carney and Apostu couldn’t settle their match in the regular eight-game pro set, but they dominated in the tiebreak to win 9-8 at the No. 2 doubles position.
With the win Carney and Apostu are now 13-1 on the season, and a perfect 5-0 in A-Sun play.
In singles play, the two teams battled each other to the point where the match was tied at 3-3. The last match left on the court was at the No. 4 singles spot between Palider and Jacksonville’s Natalia Melibeu.
The senior is no stranger to the pressure of having the match rest on her racquet as she faced the same situation just 11 days earlier against Austin Peay. Just as she did then, Palider overcame the pressure and won her match 6-2, 7-5 to give the Black and Gold the win.
Kennesaw State will be back out on the court tomorrow after as it will take on North Florida at 10 a.m.
