Owls Tennis Set For 2010-2011 Season

Owls shoot for first-ever Division I postseason appearance

7/29/2010 8:56:59 AM

KENNESAW, Ga. - The Owls men's tennis team looks to improve on a disappointing 2009-10 season after finishing out of the postseason in its first year of eligibility for NCAA Division I postseason play.  The Owls today announced their schedule for 2010-11, and the schedule should prove to be challenging.

"I really wanted to challenge the team this fall," indicated head coach T.J. Greggs.  "We need to use this fall tournament season as an opportunity to make our mark in the region as a team to be taken seriously."

The Owls will begin their fall campaign at UNC-Greensboro's fall event, followed by tournaments at Atlantic Sun rival USC-Upstate, Austin Peay State University, and Chattanooga.  The fall season will conclude with a trip to Gainesville, Fla. for the ITA Southeast regional, hosted by the Florida Gators.

In the spring, the Owls start out of the gate with a trip to New Orleans, where they will take on Xavier of Louisiana on January 28, 2011.  The home opener for the Owls will be February 5, 2011 against Presbyterian College.  Last season, the Owls downed the Blue Hose by a 4-3 count in one of the most exciting matches of the season.

In total, the Owls will face off with several teams with national rankings, including Atlantic Sun leaders East Tennessee State University, USC-Upstate, Stetson, and North Florida.  Georgia State is also expected to be a nationally-ranked program this year, and the Owls will face off with them on the road on February 23, 2011.

The Owls begin their conference schedule with a road match against Belmont University on March 4, 2011.  Last season, the Owls were eliminated from postseason contention with a loss to the Bruins, 5-2.

"We have all of our starting players back from last season," indicated Greggs.  "I anticipate us being a lot more mature and stronger mentally.  Men's tennis is one of the strongest sports in the Atlantic Sun.  We are going to have to work very hard this fall if we want to have a chance of making the postseason."
