CANTON, Ga. - The Kennesaw State Owls are in the win column as they defeated Savannah State, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match at the BridgeMill Tennis Center.
Kennesaw State (1-10) rolled over Savannah State to break its 10-match losing streak. The Owls lost just three games in the match that included three defaults by the Tigers.
"It's nice to finally get a win under our belts," said Director of Tennis Operations T.J. Greggs. " We've had six matches in the past 10 days, so it was good to get to rest some of our players today and still be able to come out with a victory."
Mercedes Cobos and Giselle Nakakura won, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles to start things off and the Owls No. 2 team of Lindsey Whalen and Jeni Thomas also won by shutout to give the Owls the double point.
In the singles flight the Owls were just as dominant. Cobos posted a straight-set blanking of Tracey Modeste. Caroline Page, playing at No. 3, also won in straight sets shutting out Chantasia Bridges.
Karen Ammann won at No. 2 in two sets while Morgan Wolkin won her first match of the season defeating Shawannda McClain, 6-0 and 6-2.
"This win will eliminate that mental hurdle of not having won a match this season," added Greggs. "So now we can focus on adding to our win total next weekend when we play Mercer, Wofford, and USC-Upstate.'
The Owls head off on a three-day road trip beginning with an Atlantic Sun Conference match against Mercer on Friday at noon. Kennesaw State will then travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to play USC Upstate on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and finish the weekend against Wofford on Sunday at noon.
