Whitlock was a pivotal key to the Owls' success in several women's sports since she first arrived at Kennesaw in 1987. She began her time with the Owls as an assistant coach for the women's basketball team, and helped KSU reach the NAIA Bi-district and District Rounds while posting a 48-12 overall record. She helped coach Kelly Alsup to honorable mention All-American honors in 1988 and 1989, and Mindi Beaver to the 1988 District Freshman of the Year.

Whitlock was then hired as the school's first-ever Senior Woman Administrator, and she held that role from 1992-96. At the same time, she was KSU's SAAC administrator for 20 years from 1992-2011, and held both those roles as the school transitioned from NAIA to Division II to Division I play.

Whitlock took on additional duties starting the next season when she became the Owls' women's tennis head coach. Over her four years, she compiled a .719 winning percentage (46-18) and guided KSU to a fourth-place finish in its first season of play at the Division II level in 1995.

She has been successful in other areas outside of athletics at KSU, as the published author was a HPS Instructor and Assistant Professor for 30 years (1987-89, 1992-2020).
