KENNESAW, Ga. – For the first time in school history, the Kennesaw State department of athletics has captured the 2017-18 ASUN Bill Bibb Trophy as all-sport champions of the league.
After finishing runner-up in the standings last year, the Owls overtook three-time defending champion FGCU, registering 240 total points out of a possible 339 for 70.8 percent.
Â
"Winning seven Conference Championships in a single year, enthroned with this coveted award to finish the season, is truly a blessing," said Kennesaw State University Director of Athletics Milton Overton. "Winning an award like this is the result of many people dedicated to our mission to build champions in the classroom, on the field, in the community and in life. The Owl Nation, including our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, alumni and donors have clearly bought in to the process of building and maintaining a winning culture. I credit Vaughn Williams and the early support of the program for laying the groundwork needed to make this achievement possible."
Â
Kennesaw State won the most championships in school history in 2017-18, capturing six ASUN Championships and winning two more tournament titles. Volleyball and softball led the way with regular season and tournament championships, as both programs made their first trips to the NCAA Tournament. Men's track & field secured the indoor and outdoor championships, women's track & field ran away with the outdoor title and women's golf won its second conference championship in the last five years.
Â
Points for the ASUN All Sports titles are awarded on a descending basis in three-point increments. A minimum of 50 percent of full-fledged members must participate in a sport for that sport to be counted in the all-sports standings. The total number of points available for each sport is established according to the number of teams participating in each sport.
Â
To go along with eight total trophies in ASUN action, the football program also made a splash with a Big South Conference championship, a 12-2 overall record, a quarterfinal appearance in the FCS Playoffs and a No. 8 final ranking.
Â
In all, the Owls won seven conference championships as an athletic department in 2017-18, sent eight teams to NCAA postseason play and hoisted nine trophies to cap the best athletic year in school history.
Â
As a result of the historic season, the department of athletics is launching its new "I'm Invested" campaign to ensure that the Owls continues to represent Kennesaw State University in a championship manner.
Â
All season ticket holders for the 2018-19 season will receive a special edition "Invested" shirt this summer as part of ticket packages. To purchase football season tickets, click here.
