THE STORYLINE:Â
· Despite a strong effort on the mound by RHP
Brooks Buckler and a combined four hits and four RBI off the bats of
Grant Williams and
Griffin Helms, the Kennesaw State baseball team dropped Sunday's non-conference game to Bradley, 6-4, at Stillwell Stadium.
· The Owls finished the opening weekend with a 1-3 overall record, while Bradley heads home with a 2-1 mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
· The Owls broke the scoreless tie in their first at-bats when
Griffin Helms, who finished the day with a pair of extra base hits, drove home two runs with a one-out double to take a 2-0 lead.
· The 2-0 edge remained true Williams' two-out, two-run RBI double in the bottom of the fourth extended KSU's lead to 4-0.
· Buckler, who made his Black and Gold debut on the mound, finished his day allowing five hits and three unearned runs in 4.2 frames of work.
· The Owls held Bradley scoreless until the visitors plated a crooked four in to top of the fifth, deadlocking the game at 4-4 heading into the final four frames.
· The score remained tied until the Braves hit a solo home run in the seventh to take a slight 5-4 lead and tacked on an insurance run in the ninth to secure the victory.
· KSU's bullpen used five pitchers, as
Jared Staples,
Max Ryan,
Luke Torbert,
Nathan Dupree and
Deviner McCray combined for 4.1 frames of work, allowing just two earned runs.
· The two teams combined for 17 hits, 10 runs, but registered five errors in the game, as only four runs were earned for the game.
