Kennesaw State Basketball Programs Receive Two Scholarships

The anonymous gift totals $50,000

KENNESAW, Ga. -- The Kennesaw State Athletics Association is proud to announce the addition of two scholarships, totaling $50,000 to benefit the men's and women's basketball programs.

The scholarships are from a generous gift from an Owls Fund donor that wishes to remain anonymous. The donor made a $50,000 total commitment to establish two scholarships -- one for the men's basketball program and one for the women's program both valued at $25,000.

Five recipients per team will benefit from the gift and the first scholarship recipients will be named this fall. This is the first named scholarship established for women's basketball, and the second for the men's program.

The donor provided a legacy statement to accompany their gift, noting "no prior relationship with the University, only a desire for them to succeed as an educational institution in my community." The donor described a desire to "inspire others through words and deeds and to support causes that build leaders," emphasizing leadership, education, community, and integrity. This gift was a demonstration of the donor's own leadership practice and their commitment to serving the community and investing in education.

"To find an individual with a true spirit of philanthropy such as this is rare," said Erin Wissing, Assistant AD for Development. "The impact that that will be made as a result of this gift is significant and will be felt immediately by the basketball programs.  The example set by this donor is inspiring and one for which we are deeply grateful."

More about the athletic scholarships:
  • Athletics currently has six named scholarships at the $25,000 level or higher -- four of which are endowed
  • Establishing a scholarship provides crucial funding to any given program, ensuring the most essential part of the program's budget -- scholarships -- are covered.
  • Covering the cost of scholarships allows head coaches the flexibility to reallocate funds to other pertinent needs, including academic resources, summer school, medical/travel, equipment, etc.
  • Scholarships come in two forms - endowed and annual.
  • To endow a scholarship, a minimum commitment of $25,000 is required. Gifts may be payable over five years. Endowed scholarships have a cross-generational impact, allowing donors to leave a legacy and benefit the program in perpetuity.
  • Annual scholarships require a minimum commitment of $5,000, payable over five years. Funds from annual scholarships benefit the program immediately and for the duration of the term.
