THE STORYLINE:
· A strong outing from right-hander Tony Dibrell was not enough for Kennesaw State in the series opener, dropping a 4-3 decision to visiting Winthrop at Stillwell Stadium on Friday night.
· Winthrop hit a three-run homer in the top of the eighth to pull ahead 4-2 on a night where strong pitching was the story on each side as the two teams scored five of its seven combined runs over the final three innings.
· With the loss, Kennesaw State dropped its overall record to 2-3, while Winthrop stayed unbeaten at 4-0 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
· In what became a pitchers' duel between a pair of right handers, Dibrell was sharp for Kennesaw State working 6.0 impressive innings.
· Dibrell, an Alpharetta, Ga., native, allowed one unearned run on four hits and totaled seven punch outs on the day to earn a no decision.
· The junior was in control after allowing two hits to open the ballgame, working two 1-2-3 innings through the first five frames and allowed just two hits over his final 15 outs.
· Winthrop's starting pitcher Reece Green countered Dibrell with 6.1 innings of work and allowed two runs (one earned) while striking out three for a no decision.
· After the Eagles broke a scoreless game with an unearned run in the top of the third, the Owls evened the scored off an RBI ground out as junior Grant Williams knocked home sophomore David Chabut –who scored all three of KSU's runs.
· Kennesaw State took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh, capitalizing off a throwing error on a fielder's choice to score Chabut to make it 2-1.
· However, the Eagles answered with a three-run homer in the top half of the eighth to take a 4-2 advantage with an inning and a half to play, and would hang on has the Owls got within one in the bottom of the ninth but left the bases loaded.
· Freshman reliever Taylor Wilkes worked a scoreless seventh inning for the Owls, striking out three Eagles in the frame to keep the visitors off the board, and senior right-hander Brock Turner also worked a scoreless frame out of the pen.

#NESTNOTES:
· Tony Dibrell now leads the team with 14 strikeouts, after totaling seven punch outs in each of his first two outings.
· Wilkes made his third appearance out of the bullpen for head coach Mike Sansing, working another scoreless frame. The Jefferson, Ga., native has thrown 3.0 innings on the season, allowing no runs and has struck out six batters.
· Chabut bumped his batting average to .444 through five games, going 8-for-18 at the plate and scoring four runs.
