FB: Brian Bohannon Named AFCA Region 2 Coach of the Year

Bohannon Has Guided the Owls to a 12-1 Record FCS Playoff Quarterfinals Appearance

WACO, Texas – Brian Bohannon, who has guided Kennesaw State to a Big South Conference championship and the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I FCS Playoffs, has been named Region 2 FCS Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), it was announced by the organization on Tuesday (Dec. 5).
 
Bohannon shared the honor with Howard head coach Mike London, who led the Bison to a 7-4 record.
 
The AFCA recognizes five regional Coach of the Year winners in each of the association's five divisions: Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III and NAIA. The winners are selected by active members of the AFCA who vote for coaches in their respective regions and divisions.
 
The winners will be honored at the American Football Coaches Awards, presented by Amway, and broadcast live on USA Today Sports Facebook page on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 8 p.m. (ET). The awards show will air from the Crown Ballroom at the Charlotte Convention Center during the 2018 AFCA Convention.
 
In his third season as head coach, Bohannon has guided the program to historic heights as the Owls have recorded a 12-1 mark, school-record 12 straight wins and a No. 16 national ranking.
 
Kennesaw State has posted three straight victories over ranked opponents – No. 22 Monmouth (52-21), No. 14 Samford (28-17) and No. 3 Jacksonville State (17-7) – and become the first FCS program to advance to the quarterfinals of the playoffs in just its third year.
 
Bohannon has watched over a program that has produced the No. 1 rushing offense (328.5) and a defense that ranks No. 1 in turnover margin (1.77), No. 2 in interceptions (23), and is No. 4 in scoring defense (14.1) in the FCS.   
 
The Owls will attempt to become the first Big South Conference program to advance to the FCS Playoff semifinals when they travel to Huntsville, Texas, to take on No. 6 seed Sam Houston State Saturday in a quarterfinal match-up beginning at 8:30 p.m. (ET).

Fifth Third Bank Stadium, the signature athletics landmark on the Kennesaw State University campus, is a world-class facility that has been recognized as one of the premier multi-use outdoor athletics venues in the country. In the fall of 2015, it become the official home of Owls football team and is home to Owls soccer and lacrosse as well.
