KENNESAW – Kennesaw State junior QB
Chandler Burks and K
Justin Thompson garnered Big South weekly awards, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
Burks was named Big South's Offensive Player of the Week, while Thompson garnered Co-Special Teams Player of the Week for their efforts during a 16-14 victory at Montana State last Saturday at Bobcat Stadium in Bozeman, Montana.
Burks, a Douglasville, Ga., native, directed the Owls to a 16-14 win in snowy conditions at Montana State with a career-high 34 rushes for 149 rushing yards and a touchdown. He opened the game's scoring with a 2-yard TD run that capped a 17-play, 89-yard drive. With Kennesaw State trailing 14-13 in the fourth quarter, Burks led the Owls -- from their own 2-yard line -- on a 20-play, 78-yard drive that took 10:03 off the clock and set-up the go-ahead field goal. He accounted for 46 yards during the drive (19 rush, 27 pass) and finished the game with 204 yards of offense.
Thompson, an Evans, Ga., native, handled the snowy elements at Montana State as he made all three field goal attempts and finished with 10 points -- including the go-ahead 37-yard field goal with 1:55 remaining in the game. He was successful from 35, 40 and 37 yards and led the Owls' back from a 14-10 deficit with two second-half field goals.
The Owls (8-1, 3-0) return from a two-week road stint and remains unbeaten over their last eight games. Kennesaw State welcomes Charleston Southern (5-4, 2-1) to Fifth Third Bank Stadium for a Big South Conference showdown Saturday afternoon.
