KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State redshirt freshman LB
Bryson Armstrong has been named to the STATS FCS Jerry Rice Award, it was announced on Wednesday afternoon. A list of 20 finalists will be chosen in November.
The award is handed out annually to the most outstanding freshman player in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) as chose by a nationwide panel of media, college sports information directors, broadcasters and writers.

Through just seven games in his career, Armstrong has compiled 56 total tackles (44 solo), 6.0 tackles for loss, 6.0 sacks – which is already just two shy of KSU's career record, three interceptions, four pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble and a blocked kick. Â
The Marietta, Ga., native has been a two-time Big South Freshman of the Week honoree, a STATS FCS National Player of the Week, and a two-time STATS FCS National Freshman of the Week Honorable Mention winner through seven weeks.
Armstrong enters Week 8 at Presbyterian ranked seventh in the nation in fumbles recovered, 29
th in interceptions per game, and fourth in the Big South with 56 total tackles. He ranks first in the conference in sacks and first among all linebackers with 44 solo tackles.
The redshirt freshman recorded seven tackles (five solo), a fumble recovery and an interception in his collegiate debut, before being named Big South Freshman of the Week after a nine-tackle performance with one tackle for loss, one sack, and a  fumble recovery in the Owls' 27-14 home-opening victory over Tennessee Tech. Armstrong continued his impressive play with a KSU program-record 15 tackles (13 solo) at Alabama State and had one of three Kennesaw State interceptions in a 20-14 victory over the Hornets. He racked up two sacks, a forced fumble and an interception, recording his fourth takeaway throughout his first three games of his career.
Monmouth's redshirt freshman RB Pete Guerriero and Presbyterian's freshman RB Torrance Marable are the other Big South representatives.
Entering Saturday with a program-best 6-1 start and winners of six straight following a 17-3 victory over Gardner-Webb, Kennesaw State remains in Big South play against Presbyterian College. The conference clash is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff at Bailey Memorial Stadium, and can be seen on Peachtree TV in Atlanta or heard on ESPN Radio 1230 and 106.3.
