KENNESAW, Ga. – Junior Alexandra Apostu and sophomore Virginie Stein of the Kennesaw State women’s tennis team garnered a pair of honors from the Atlantic Sun Conference, the league announced Thursday, as Apostu and Stein were both named to their second-straight A-Sun All-Conference First-Team, as well as to the All-Academic Team.

“We have been improving all season and happy that our effort and hard work has been noticed,” said Head Coach Jeff Kutac. “It is great honor for both Virgie and Alex to be recognized by the conference. We are looking forward to seeing them contribute in our Atlantic Sun Championship quarterfinal match.”

Apostu, a three-time A-Sun Player of the Week, ranks in a tie for second on the team in singles wins with a 10-9 mark, including a 6-1 record at the No. 3 position. She finished the regular season winning seven of her last 10 matches, including six straight in conference action. The Bucharest, Romania native owns a 6-2 mark in singles action in the A-Sun, including a 6-0 mark at the No. 3 position, which leads the conference at that position.

In doubles play, Apostu owns a team-leading 11-6 overall record and is the co-leader in conference action with a 6-2 mark. Apostu and sophomore Jana Hueckinghaus have been on a tear recently and are 6-2 in their last eight matches, including a 6-1 mark in conference action, which ranks second in the conference.

Stein, the 2012 A-Sun Freshman of the Year, has continued her impressive play from a season ago and is the co-leader on the team in singles wins with an 11-8 record in 2013, all coming at the No. 1 singles position. In conference action, the Gevelsberg, Germany native has won five-consecutive matches and boasts a 5-2 mark. She is currently riding a two-match winning streak and has gone 6-3 with one match unfinished in her last 10 matches.

In doubles action, Stein ranks second on the team with a 10-7 record and has won five matches at both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. In A-Sun play, Stein has partnered with sophomore Tamara Plocher to own a 5-2 mark and finished the season winning two in a row at the No. 2 position.

Apostu, Stein and the Owls are set to begin the 2013 A-Sun Women’s Tennis Championships on Friday, April 19 as the No. 6 seed in the tournament. KSU will face No. 3 seed USC Upstate at the Bristol Racquet Club in Bristol, Tenn., at 11:30 a.m. (ET). The event was originally scheduled to be held at the ETSU Tennis Center on the campus of East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tenn., but a forecast of rain showers forced the location to be changed.

Kennesaw State defeated the Spartans in the teams’ lone match this season, posting a 4-3 win a week ago on Friday, April 13 at the Fair Oaks Tennis Center in Marietta, Ga.
