Men's Golf Likes Odds to Advance out of NCAA Golf Regional

Owls set for NCAA Ann Arbor Regional

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State men’s golf team heads to the 2012 NCAA Men’s Golf Ann Arbor Regional, May 17-19, at the University of Michigan Course. KSU will appear in their second consecutive NCAA Regional as the Owls enter the event having won three titles in 2011-12.

The 75-competitor field will play 54 holes (18 each day) on the par-71, 6,723-yard U-M Golf Course, which was designed by Alister MacKenzie. The field features 13 teams and 10 individuals including No.1 Southern California, No.2 Oregon, No.3 Kent State (Mid-American Conference champion), No.4 Virginia, No.5. Baylor, No.6 Oklahoma State, No.7 Kennesaw State, No.8 TCU, No.9 Purdue, No.10 North Carolina State, No.11 Notre Dame (Big East Conference), No.12 Ohio State and No.13. Navy (Patriot League).

The 10 individuals are: 1. Peter Williamson, Dartmouth; 2. Matt Thompson, Michigan; 3. Sebastian MacLean, Xavier; 4. Erik Van Rooyen, Minnesota; 5. Dan Ellis, Michigan State; 6. Tyler Merkel, Ball State; 7. Charlie Bull, Akron; 8. Chad Ebert, Green Bay; 9. William Park, Army; 10. Greg Matthias, Delaware.

The NCAA Ann Arbor Regional will be 54 holes of stroke-play competition with 18 holes each day. First- and second-day pairings will be determined by seedings. Final-day pairings will be determined by team totals from the previous rounds.

The low five teams at the Ann Arbor Regional and the low individual not on a qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Championships, to be held May 29-June 3 at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

"We are excited to get back into competition this week," head coach Jay Moseley said. "We've had about a month off from competition, but this team has prepared so well for this event. It should be a lot of fun to go out and compete on a great course in a great field and we are really looking forward to it."

The lineup for the Black and Gold will be at No.1 Matt Nagy, No.2 Jeff Karlsson, No.3 Ben Greene, No.4 Jimmy Beck and No.5 Peder Lunde Hermansson.

About the team:

Nagy is a two time first team All Atlantic Sun Conference representative. He competed in all 10 of the Owls events and maintained a stroke average of 72.59, with his top finish on the season coming at the Memphis Intercollegiate with a third place performance. His lowest round of the season was a course and KSU school record, as he posted a 63, -8 at the Seminole Intercollegiate, which ranks fifth lowest in the country for 2011-12.

Karlsson was named a second team All A-Sun Conference Selection this season after being the 2011 conference Player of the Year. He participated in eight of the team’s 10 events while maintaining a stroke average of 72.52 for tops on the team. His low round of the season was a 65, -6 at the Seminole Intercollegiate. Karlsson sustained a first round average of 71.29, and 4.75 par-five scoring average. He led the team with 81 birdies on the season, converting 34 percent of his birdie opportunities, good for fourth in the country. Karlsson was also honored as a 2012 A-Sun All Academic team member.

Greene competed in eight of the Owls 10 events while holding a stroke average of 74.38. Greene won the individual title at the Memphis Intercollegiate with a 72-72-71= 215, -1 over the 54-hole event, and finished second at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate, carding a 77-69- 73=219, +3, His low round of the season was a 69, -3 en route to carding 52 birdies on the season.

Beck was named a 2012 All A-Sun Freshmen Team Honoree as he competed in nine of the Owls 10 events as true freshman, while holding a stroke average of 74.85. His top finish of 10th place came at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate, earning Beck the A-Sun Conference Golfer of the Week for 11/1. Beck closed out the season with a par-five average of 4.90, with 66 birdies on the season.

Hermansson saw action in two events this season as the junior enters the Regional with a 78.0 stroke average. His low round of the season was a 75 at the Memphis Intercollegiate. Hermansson will be making his postseason debut for the Owls.
