JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The women's tennis team looks for their first postseason win in the NCAA DIvision I era tomorrow when they face off with Stetson University in the first round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. The two teams finished with identical 6-3 conference records, with Stetson downing the Owls by a score of 4-3 in their first meeting on March 3, 2012.
The No. 5 Owls are sure to feel some energy from the recently-announced All-Conference awards. Four Owls were bestowed honors, including freshman
Virginie Stein being named the A-Sun Freshman of the Year. Also honored were senior
Vera Shkundina, sophomore
Alexandra Apostu, and freshman
Jana Hueckinghaus. Shkundina and Apostu joined Stein on the All-Conference First Team, while Hueckinghaus was named to the All-Freshmen Team. Apostu was also honored as a unanimous selection to the All-Academic Team.
The Owls (14-7, 6-3 A-Sun) will face No. 4 Stetson for the second straight year in the playoffs, having dropped a 4-0 decision a year ago. Stetson (13-6, 6-3 A-Sun) will need to rely on their depth to down the Owls, whose top three players finished a combined 25-2 in conference play, and all won against Stetson in their first meeting.
The Owls and Hatters will begin play at 1:30 p.m. on the campus of East Tennessee State University. Live scoring and recaps will be available through the Atlantic Sun Championship site.
