MACON, Ga. - Kennesaw State continued to make history by having four players named to the various Atlantic Sun All Conference teams in an announcement made by the conference office today. Freshman standout
Virginie Stein received the school's first-ever "Freshman of the Year" honor, and senior star
Vera Shkundina was one of only two unanimous all-conference first team selections.
The all-conference announcements were dominated by three teams, including UNF, ETSU and the Owls. The first team consisted of three players from UNF, two from ETSU, and three from Kennesaw State. Shkundina was joined on the first team by sophomore
Alexandra Apostu and Stein. Also named to the All-Freshman Team was
Jana Hueckinghaus, who went on a tear the second half of the season, winning six of her last seven matches in conference, four of them by perfect 6-0, 6-0 scorelines.
Shkundina, who received postseason honors for the fourth consecutive year, was a unanimous selection along with A-Sun Player of the Year, Aline Berkenbrock of UNF. Apostu receives her second straight honor, after being named to the All-Freshman team a year ago. Stein is the only freshman to be named to the first team this season, after compiling in impressive 18-3 record this season, including a perfect 9-0 mark in the conference.
"I am thrilled that these young women have been honored for their performances this season," commented Head Coach
Jeff Kutac. "All four of these women deserve all the praise they receive, as they are excellent workers, and great to have in our program."
The Owls will compete this weekend in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament, when they face off with Stetson University on Friday on the campus of East Tennessee State University. Live stats will be available from the championship page on the Atlantic Sun Conference Website.
