KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State Owls head women’s volleyball coach Karen Weatherington announced the spring schedule for her squad on Tuesday. The Black and Gold will play at three different events and take on nine different programs.
“We’re mostly focused on our side of the net during the spring. The outside competition will be good for our younger players, who haven’t gotten the chance to get out there as much during the fall,” Weathertington said. “We spend a lot of time during spring practice honing individual skills, and so it always a great opportunity for us to see how that skill development translates to competitive play during our spring matches.”
The Owls will be in action this spring for the first time this coming Saturday, when they play a quartet of two-set matches against the likes of South Carolina, Atlantic Sun Conference rival South Carolina Upstate, Coastal Carolina and Wake Forest. The event will be held at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.
The following two weekends will each involve three two-out-three set matches. Saturday, Mar. 31, will see the Owls travel just down the road to Georgia Tech, where they will face the Yellow Jackets, as well as Ole Miss and Troy. They wrap things up at Alabama-Birmingham on Apr. 7, where they will face the Blazers, as well as Jacksonville State and Troy.
Kennesaw State’s spring matches will be the culmination the of the eight-week spring practice period, which began at the end of February and wraps up during the second week of April. With individual skills being the emphasis during this period, Weatherington has been able to take a closer look at how her returnees have been developing.
“Sara Metroka has certainly enhanced her setting skills, and is getting stronger in the weight room everyday,” Weatherington said of the sophomore, who is already the program’s all-time assists leader with 2,082 after just two seasons with the Black and Gold. “I’ve also been very excited to see the development of Chad
é Martin, who is really starting to turn the corner and use her athleticism to maximize her volleyball skills.”
The Owls return eight players from the 2011 squad that finished fourth in the Atlantic Sun Conference, including Metroka, who was second in the league in assists.
