Freeman named Freshman All-American

6/9/2010 4:35:52 PM

KENNESAW, Ga. - For the second season in a row, a Kennesaw State baseball player has been recognized with All-American status as freshman Ronnie Freeman (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American team as announced by Collegiate Baseball this afternoon.

Last season, pitcher Chad Jenkins was named Third Team All-American by the same organization.  With the award, Freeman becomes the 20th KSU baseball player to achieve All-American status.

The freshman led the Owls in 2010 in batting average with a .365 mark.  A Second Team All-Atlantic Sun honoree, Freeman completed the season with a 29 game hitting streak, encapsulating all of April and May in the process.  Freeman's ended the season with the second-longest active streak in NCAA Division I.

The catcher started in 52 games for the Owls, with almost every start coming behind the plate.  He led the team with 77 hits, 112 total bases, and 47 RBIs.

"I couldn't be prouder of Ronnie," said KSU head coach Mike Sansing.  "He was put in a very difficult spot of having to come in and be the everyday catcher for us.  He excelled both offensively at the plate and defensively behind the plate.  It's a tough challenge for a freshman to have to handle a pitching staff and also perform well with the bat.  He did both of those things well and he is very deserving of this award."

The Owls finished the season with a 23-32 record, including wins over in-state rivals Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Georgia State.
