KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State Lady Owls basketball team spent the afternoon at the Wellington Place Assisted Living Facility on Apr. 24 as part of the team’s Project Tap-In, a program of increased community service and outreach started by this year’s team.
“I am so proud of our seniors for getting this project started,” said head coach Colby Tilley. “We are glad that we could be part of the community.”
Kennesaw State players Lisa Capellan, Brandi Jones, Brionna Jones, Tamasha Bolden, Angie Smith, Rachel Loe, Ashley Holliday spent the afternoon at Wellington Place of Kennesaw entertaining the residents with a number of activities, including board games, puzzles, storytelling and sing-a-longs.
“Visiting the residents of Wellington Place was a life enhancing experience,” said senior DeAndrea Bullock, who helped in part create Project Tap-In. “The seniors this year wanted to leave a strong legacy for the Lady Owls program and we felt starting this tradition would be memorable and have an impact on teams to follow,”
“Whenever we can, we should give back to the community,” said freshman Sametria Gideon. “Especially the elderly for everything they have taught and as a way of saying thank you.”
Project Tap-In (Together Aiding People In Need) was created as a lifelong community service project that will impact a number of charities and organization each year. The program began from an idea from the senior class as a way to do leave a permanent influence on the Lady Owls program and was eagerly embraced by the underclassman.
“This was our first experience with Wellington Place and it was one of the most memorable and joyful moments of my life,” added assistant coach James Black who attended the volunteer event with assistant coach Yolisha Jackson. “To reach out to the community and let senior citizens know they are appreciated and loved is special and something we look forward to continuing.”
The Lady Owls will continue their charity and volunteer efforts throughout the summer and into next season with fundraising events and community service.
